How to Prepare for Your Engagement Session

Are you preparing for your engagement session and feeling a bit overwhelmed? I’m here to help! Your engagement session is a great opportunity for you and your photographer to get to know each other. It gives you the opportunity to feel comfortable in front of the camera before your big day. Plus, it will make a huge impact on the flow of your wedding day!

During your engagement session, I’ll help you with posing and lighting, so you can feel like a pro on your wedding day. By the time your big day arrives, I’ll already know how you and your partner interact, what your best poses are, and how to capture you in the best light possible. The experience of your engagement session is invaluable!

I always recommend scheduling your engagement session at least 6 months before your wedding. Most of my couples do theirs around 8 months before. As you start planning for your session, think about locations that have a special meaning to you or that you love. If you’re unsure, ask your photographer to help you decide on a location. As long as the light is great, your photographer can make any location work. From farms to museums to downtown alleys, I’ve shot at all sorts of places!

I know that having your photo taken can be intimidating, but I’m here to make it a stress-free experience. I’ve put together the basics and what to bring to make your session as effortless as possible. By the end of your session, you’ll have had a great time, and you’ll be ready to rock your wedding photos!

The Basics and What to Bring

Empty your Pockets

Leave your phone in the car and leave your keys with your photographer! We don’t want any weird bulging or patterns coming from something you’ve left in your pockets

Bring Comfy Shoes

Sometimes we have to walk a little way to where we want to do our shoot! I always recommend bringing a pair of flip-flops or shoes that easily slide on and off to make it easier on you until you change into your cute heels.

Bring your Lipstick and Hairspray

To help tame flyaways, bring hairspray along! Also, bring your lipstick if you’re wearing it as it might fade after a few smooches. If you choose a bold lip color, go for a matte finish so it won’t transfer to your partner.

Clean your Ring!

Clean your ring before your session! Sometimes lotion or hand sanitizer finds its way into your ring and it can affect how shiny it is! We always do some close-up, glamour shots of the ring by itself, so make sure it’s cleaned. Here’s my favorite cleaner from Amazon.

Bring Change for a Meter

I always recommend bringing a few bucks in change with you in case we have to park on a street or in a lot.

Check your Nails

While you absolutely do not need to go get a full manicure, check your nails and make sure they’re clean! This goes for your partner, too. Little details like this matter, especially when we want to focus on your new bling!

Relax and Take Some Deep Breaths

Seriously! Relax and enjoy this! I’m going to help you along the way, and it will be so much fun! I encourage all of my couples to take this time together and make a date out of it. Head to your favorite dinner spot afterward and celebrate.
